As a scientist looking to develop novel sensors and active materials, I draw my inspiration from life. Plants, animals and microorganisms are incredible machines evolved for hundreds of millions of years to accomplish specific tasks with unbelievable performance. Most of their properties we still have to discover and more we still have to understand. As an engineer I believe it must be possible to harvest these properties and integrate them into engineered devices for the benefit of society. I think of it like a pharmacology of the engineering. As a consequence, my research focuses on the generation of new bionic sensing and actuating materials, in which the biological cellular component play the active role. Dr. Raffaele Di Giacomo
